
BACKGROUND
The mission of the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) is to prepare selected candidates (enlisted men and women) morally, mentally, and physically, with emphasis on strengthening the academic foundation for officer accession through the U. S. Naval Academy.
The academic curriculum is post-secondary with courses in English (composition, rhetoric, and literature), mathematics (college algebra, college trigonometry, calculus—both differential and integral), chemistry and physics. The scope of academic operations consists of four department supervisors, approximately 30 faculty, staff, and approximately 300 students participating in 10 months of instruction.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Mission: To serve as the chief academic officer and principal advisor to the Commanding Officer of the Naval Academy Preparatory School in all matters relating to the academic program and faculty.
Functions:
1. Implements and supports Naval Academy Preparatory School policy regarding academic matters.
2. Guides, supervises, and evaluates all aspects of the academic program.
3. Responsible for the academic oversight of the English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Learning Skills and Information Technology curricula
4. Maintains liaison with the Academic Dean of the Naval Academy, who is responsible for the academic oversight of NAPS, including quality of the curriculum and all related matters.
5. Maintains the highest quality of performance by each member of the academic faculty. Initiates personnel actions involved in the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and promotion of the academic faculty.
6. Sets Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) objectives and contributes to the EEO program at NAPS.
7. Prepares academic budget formulations and executes a quarterly budget in concert with department supervisors.
8. Provides academic counseling and guidance to students.
9. Participates in the final recommendations for appointments to the Academy.
10. Acts as Registrar, maintains records and statistical data, and supervises the preparation of NAPS’ transcripts.
11. Oversees publication of NAPS Academic Calendar, the Academic Policy and Procedures Manual, the Course Compendium, and the academic portions of the NAPS Regulations and Organizational Manual.
12. Serves as the senior member of the Academic Record Review.
13. Represents or assists the Commanding Officer of NAPS at various meetings and conferences as appropriate.
14. Assists the Commanding Officer of NAPS in the execution and maintaining of the civilian payroll budget.
15. As a member of the NAPS Executive Team, coordinates with the other NAPS Executive Team members and provides recommendations to the Commanding Officer of NAPS on pertinent issues.![]()
