Professor McCormick served as the first chair of the Department of Naval Systems Engineering at the Academy, a position he held for two years. Additionally, he served as the director of Ocean Engineering for 12 years at the Academy. At Johns Hopkins University, he chaired the undergraduate part-time programs in Engineering and Applied Science and the masters program in Civil Engineering. At the Academy, he was the Naval Sea Systems Command Research Professor for two years and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Professor for nine years. For his contributions to the Naval Academy, Prof. McCormick received U. S. Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the U. S. Navy Superior Civilian Service Award. In addition, he was awarded the first U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Award for Research Excellence.

The extra-curricular activities of Prof. McCormick included editing the Marine Technology Society Journal and co-editing the journal Ocean Engineering. In addition, he was the co-editor of the Wiley Ocean Engineering Book Series and the Wiley Alternative Energy Book Series. With Prof. Bhattacharyya, he now co-edits the Elsevier Ocean Engineering Book Series. His non-academic activities included being the technical advisor to the Ocean Energy Division of the U. S. Department of Energy, the Department of Natural Resources Erosion Control Group of the State of Maryland and the Governor's Commission of Erosion Control. In Maryland, he is a registered professional engineer. He also holds two patents in the areas of drag reduction and bi-directional air turbines.

Professor McCormick's societal memberships include the Marine Technology Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He holds the rank of Fellow in these three societies. He is also a member of Tau Beta Pi and the society of Sigma Xi.

Interests
In May, 2003, Professor McCormick concluded his forty-two years of teaching to devote his time to research interests. Presently, he has two remaining doctoral students at Johns Hopkins working in the areas of grounded-ship migration and hydroelasticity. He is also an engineering advisor to a wave-energy conversion project now underway in Ireland. At the Naval Academy, he is studying the diffraction focusing phenomenon associated with floating bodies in waves.
   
Publications Professor McCormick's publications include two books, Ocean Engineering Wave Mechanics and Ocean Wave Energy Conversion, both published by John Wiley and Sons. He has also co-edited the book Ocean Wave Utilization with Professor Young Kim of the California State University, Los Angeles. In addition, he has contributed chapters in the Encyclopedia of Earth Science, Experiments in Fluid Mechanics by Professor Robert Granger, the Encyclopedia of Hydrology and Water Resources and the Encyclopedia of Ocean Sciences. Presently, he is under contract to Elsevier Science Ltd to co-author a book on Ocean Wave Utilization with Dr. D. R. B. Kraemer of the University of Wisconsin and is completing a text titled Ocean Wave Hydromechanics.
