Mission The Naval Academy Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) has been an ongoing project for several years. The ultimate objective of the project is to compete in the AUVSI International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition (AUVSI). The competition rules set forth the guidelines for vehicle weight and dimensions as well as the different tasks the vehicle must accomplish. The initial details for the 2011 competition have been posted on AUVSI's website. This year is the 14th annual competition and has been based around completing a Valentine's Day themed course.
Course Challenges (2011): The Path – There will be six sections of the path which are 4 feet (1.2 m) long by 6 inches (15 cm) wide PVC sheet. They will be painted orange. The first segment will be just beyond the gate and will point toward the flare. The second segment will be just beyond the flare and point toward the barded wire. Just beyond the barbed wire, will be two segments. One will point toward the bombing run, while the second will point toward the machine gun nest. Finally after the bombing run and the machine gun nest there will be a segment that points towards the secret documents and the rendezvous point. Flowers (Buoy) – The task consists of a red 9” float. The buoy is moored to the floor and will stay moored to the floor. Lover's Lane (PVC to pass through) – Two sections of PVC pipe will be arranged in an L shape. The vehicle must pass in the middle of the L. Love Letters (Bins) - Each black bin will be surrounded by a 6” white border. There are a total of four bins to drop markers into. A total of two markers can be dropped. Each bin will have an X or an O large or small. Markers that contain X's and O's will drop into their respective bins for points. Max points for dropping markers correctly into the large or small letter bin, to be specified before the run. Cupid ( Target Window) – The square with large and small heart cutouts is place vertically in the water column. One side is red, the other is blue. To successfully complete this task, a vehicle must fire a red projectile through the red side, and a blue projectile through the blue side. Max points are awarded for firing through the smaller heart cutout. Vase and Sweetie's House ( PVC recovery and octagon) – This task consists of an acoustic pinger located off the floor of the pool. Placed directly above the pinger is a cylinder for the vehicle to retrieve. Floating above the pinger on the surface will be an octagon representing the rendezvous point. In order to obtain full points for the zone, the vehicle must surface fully inside the octagon. 2011 Competition Description and Rules
