Categories of Spaces Used for Instruction and Their Meanings

Category Definition
Auditorium Very large space, seating over 300, typically with: special A/V equipment, tiered, fixed seats, stage or lectern. Currently: Alumni Hall Auditorium, Halsey Field House Main Arena, Mahan Hall Auditorium, Mitscher Hall Auditorium
Classroom Teaching space, seating 10-50.
Classroom - Lab Space usable as a regular classroom with lab equipment. One section only.
Lab - Aero Space usable as a regular classroom with EA lab equipment
Lab - Chemistry Space usable as a regular classroom with SC lab equipment
Lab - Computer Space usable as a regular classroom with generic computer equipment
Lab - Computer Science Space usable as a regular classroom with SI lab equipment
Lab - EE Space usable as a regular classroom with EE lab equipment
Lab - Language Space usable as a regular classroom with FL lab equipment
Lab - Math Space usable as a regular classroom with SM lab equipment
Lab - ME Space usable as a regular classroom with EM lab equipment
Lab - Ocean Space usable as a regular classroom with Oceano lab equipment
Lab - Physics Space usable as a regular classroom with SP lab equipment
Lab - Systems Space usable as a regular classroom with ES lab equipment
Lab - Tactical Space usable as a regular classroom with SeaNav lab equipment
Lecture Hall Large room seating 20-299, configured for lectures and demonstrations, often with one or more of the following characteristics: lectern or stage, special A/V equipment, computer with network connection, tiered, fixed seats, participants facing forward
Multi Classroom The “multi” prefix indicates that this space is temporarily being used for more than one section. Classrooms, classroom-labs, and seminar rooms may not be scheduled with more than one section at any time and the scheduling software prevents such conflicting use. This category allows exceptions so that more than one section may be scheduled in the space. Normally, czars will re-categorize the space after the exception has been accommodated.

Office Rarely used for teaching purposes.
Planetarium The Luce Hall Planetarium, also a Lecture Hall.
Seminar Room A smaller space, seating not more than 25, configured for discussion, with attendees facing one another, often around a central table. One section only.
