Selden Chapin was born September 19, 1899 in PA. He and his classmates from the
class of 1920 graduated early on June 6, 1919; a practice established in 1917 to
address a shortage of Naval Officers in the Fleet during and shortly after the
First World War
Selden Chapin was the first Director-General of Foreign Service, appointed to the position November 13, 1946 and served in that position until 1947. He went on to serve as the US Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Hungary, appointed April 10, 1947 and served in that position until 1949. After that, he was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Netherlands from October 1949 to October 1953, at which point he became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Panama until May 1955. Following that he became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Iran until June 1958. Then, in March of 1960, he became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Peru until August of that year. He also was a Deputy Commandant of the National War College. He passed away March 26, 1963.
