Machtley, a Representative from Rhode Island; born in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa., July 13, 1948; attended public schools; B.S., United States Naval Academy, 1970; served in the United States Navy, 1970-1975; J.D., Suffolk University Law School, 1978; admitted to the bar in 1978 and commenced practice in Newport, R.I.; commander, United States Naval Reserve; elected as a Republican to the One Hundred First and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1989-January 3, 1995); was not a candidate for reelection in 1994, but was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Rhode Island.
