After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958, Senator McCain became a naval aviator and served 22 years in the Navy. In 1967, he was shot down over Hanoi and was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five and a half years (1967-73). Senator McCain has received numerous awards, including the Silver Star; Bronze Star; Legion of Merit; Purple Heart; and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After two terms as a U.S. Representative (1982-86), John McCain is currently serving his third term in the U.S. Senate(1986 - present). In the 106th Congress, Senator McCain is Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and serves on the Armed Services and Indian Affairs Committees.
