Jimmy Carter graduated from the Naval Academy with the Class of 1947. He later did graduate work in nuclear physics at Union College. During his naval career, he served as a submariner in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rose to the rank of Lieutenant, working under Admiral Rickover in the development of the nuclear submarine program.

After the Navy, he embarked on a career in politics, and was elected the thirty-ninth President of the United States on November 2, 1976. In 1982, he became University Distinguished Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, GA..

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."
