Profile

Jeffrey Fitzgerald received his Bachelors of Science degree (Magna cum Laude) in Chemistry from the University of Vermont in 1982. He worked a short time for IBM Corporation and then earned his Ph.D in Organic Chemistry at Stanford University in 1987. Joining the faculty of U.S. Naval Academy in 1987, he was appointed a full Professor in 1999 and Chair of Chemistry in 2002. Prof. Fitzgerald regularly teaches general, organic and polymer chemistry and has published extensively on the chemistry of tetraazaporphyrins. He has advised two Trident Scholars. Significant administrative responsibilities have included Safety Officer, Financial Officer and Chair, Renovation Committee for the USNA Chemistry Deptartment and Premedical Advisor for the Academy. Prof. Fitzgerald has twice held the Kinnear Chair in Chemistry and was recently awarded the Navy’s Civilian Meritorious Service Medal.
