Major Derek J. Snyder, USMC
Major Derek J. Snyder Born in Biloxi, Mississippi and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1993 after graduating high school. After serving five years as a helicopter mechanic at Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1), he was selected into the Marine Enlisted Education Commissioning Program which led to his commission as a 2ndLt after graduating from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 2000. After completing The Basic School at Quantico, Virginia, Major Snyder received orders to Pensacola, Florida for flight training. After receiving his wings, he received orders to Marine Heavy Helicopter Training Squadron 302 (HMT-302) to be qualified as a Helicopter Second Pilot in the CH-53E.
His first fleet assignment was with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 (HMH-464) aboard Marine Corp Air Station New River, North Carolina as an Operations Officer. Shortly after joining HMH-464, Major Snyder was attached to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 162 (HMM-162) to serve as the Air Combat Element (ACE) for the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Major Snyder deployed with the 26th MEU as an ACE Current Operations Officer in April 2005 and participated Joint Exercise Caya Green in Israel, Operation Seahorse in Southern Iraq, and Exercise Infinite Moonlight in Jordan.
After returning from the 26th MEU, Major Snyder returned to HMH-464 where he served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Flight Line Division in addition to the head of the squadron logistics, communications, and supply departments. In May 2007, Major Snyder was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 (MWSS-272) as the Airfield Operations Company Commander. He deployed with MWSS-272 in September 2007 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 06-08.2 where his company supported I and II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) air combat operations at forward operating bases throughout the Al Anbar Province. Major Snyder was ordered to the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey California in July 2009 where he earned a Master of Science degree in Information Warfare Systems Engineering.
Major Snyder is currently assigned to the United States Naval Academy: Center for Cyber Security Studies as a Military Instructor. His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal.
