Q: What exactly is the Silent Drill Team?
A: The USNA Silent Drill Team - The Jolly Rogers - is a brotherhood of men and women that are America's elite. It is classified as a Brigade Support Activity (BSA) and fulfills the midshipmen's extracurricular activity requirement. The Silent Drill Team's mission includes representing the Brigade of Midshipmen at various activities ranging from parades to organized drill competitions against other service academies and college ROTC units. The Team is lead by midshipmen, with an Officer and Enlisted Representative in an advisory role.
Q: How does one become a member of the Jolly Rogers?
A: The hardest part of becoming a member is gaining admission to the United States Naval Academy. Once this hurdle is cleared, just contact the First Class Midshipman in Charge, the Commanding Officer, and he will give you further instructions.
Q: Is a previous knowledge of drill a requirement?
A: No. Every midshipmen receives thorough instruction in drill during Plebe Summer, the Silent Drill Team will build on this knowledge to enhance your close order drill proficiency.
Q: Where do the Jolly Rogers get their routines?
A: The Silent Drill Team relies on many sources for routine ideas. Many midshipmen on the team have previous experience and bring their new ideas to the team. Other drill units, such as the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, also spur creativeness and innovation, which are the essentials for an amazing routine.
Q: Can you tell me how do perform your movements?
A: The drill movements utilized by the Jolly Rogers do not lend themselves to written or verbal description. The best way to learn from someone is visually. Also, movements are only constrained by your imagination and skill level - be creative and work hard.
Q: Well then, can I get a video of the Silent Drill Team performing? How about t-shirts, etc?
A: We are not allowed to sell DVDs, shirts or anything else through this website. However, we are currently taking recent performance videos and putting them up in the Videos section. Please feel free to download these videos to your computer and show them to everyone you please.
Q: What type of weapons does the Silent Drill Team utilize?
A: The Silent Drill Team uses decommissioned M-14 7.62 mm rifles for all routines.
Q: Hey! Where'd my pictures go?
A: In an effort to make the site easier to upgrade for future lucky webmasters, it has been slightly reorganized. All pictures from this year (starting with the Change of Command Performance) are located in the 2002-2003 pictures section. All other pictures are located in the "Older Pictures" section
