EE472 Course Policy, Spring 2013

I. Textbook: Fiber Optic Communications, by Joseph C. Palais, is required. Supplemental Textbooks: Projects in Fiber Optics, Newport Corp., Fiber Optic Test and Measurement, by Dennis Derickson, will be used occasionally in the laboratory.

II. Classroom Procedure: If the instructor is more than ten minutes late, the section leader should contact the ECE Dept office (3-6150) and have the class read the text, complete homework or work on simulation exercises. Should the instructor fail to arrive by the end of class, the section leader should collect any homework for the day and deliver it to the ECE office (Maury 327) after the period.
The students and instructor are expected to maintain a professional atmosphere in the classroom at all times.  Sleeping is not allowed.  Students may feel free to stand in the back or sides of the room at any time if necessary.  Refrain from rude behavior and speech.  Food and/or drink in the classroom are permitted as long as they are not a distraction to the class. You are responsible for keeping the classroom clean. Food and drink will be banned from the classroom if this privilege is abused.  Food and drink are NOT permitted in the laboratory.

III. Calculators/Computers: Pocket calculators are permitted for all work. Only calculators approved for use on the FE exam may be used.  Sharing of calculators is not permitted.  Computers will be used often to simulate various effects in fiber communication systems.

IV. Grades: Exams (2) 40%, Final Exam/Project 30%, HW/Laboratory/Quizzes 30%

V. Exams: There will be two comprehensive examinations as scheduled on the syllabus and a final examination or project. You must notify me well in advance if you will be absent for any exam.

VI. Homework/Quizzes: Homework is for your benefit and is assigned each week.  It consists of a reading and a problem assignment.  The problems will usually be collected.  Quizzes will be given occasionally to test the concepts from the reading and homework.  For problem assignments, show all steps, clearly label and box the answer with units. Sloppy work is a failure to communicate and will receive little, if any, credit.  Problem assignments turned in late will receive zero credit.  Solutions to problem assignments will be posted.  Collaboration on homework is encouraged, as long as proper citation is given; duplication is not allowed.

VII. Laboratory Projects: Labs are scheduled as shown in the syllabus. You must complete all lab exercises to pass the course. Lab reports may occasionally be required.  You are expected to read lab exercises prior to your arrival in the lab. You must speak with me in advance if you will be absent for any lab. A lab project manual may be assigned to each of you at the beginning of the course and you will return it at the end of the course. The project manual is your responsibility. If lost, it will be replaced at your expense.

Safety is paramount in an optics laboratory. Observing a laser beam directly with the eye is dangerous. Additionally, some fiber optic equipment is fragile and expensive.  If I observe any unsafe behavior (not using goggles when necessary, horseplay, etc.) in the laboratory, you will receive a zero credit for that project, leave the lab immediately, and speak with me or the Dept Chairman before being permitted back into the laboratory.

VIII. Extra-Instruction: EI may be scheduled at any mutually agreed upon time. E-mail will be used extensively during the semester. Use it or voice-mail at any time to contact the instructor.
