The Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy is responsible for the conservation and sound use of our precious natural resources. The Academy is firmly committed to the principles of environmental and natural resource protection set forth by the Department of the Navy, Department of Defense, and the President of the Untied States. An important part of the Navy's mission is to prevent pollution, protect the environment, and conserve natural, historic, and cultural resources. All personnel: civilian, military, and contractors working for the Navy, shall comply with all applicable federal, state, local, and Navy environmental regulations. 

People are linked to one another by their individual effect upon the environment. These positive and negative effects may not appear great when taken one at a time, but their combined and cumulative results are incalculable. For the Academy and the Department of the Navy's environmental programs to work, every individual and group must take personal accountability for and pride in their actions. These guidelines will be followed in your daily efforts to help improve our environment: 
 

• Take every opportunity to consider how your actions will affect the environment. 
  
  
• Analyze every procedure which could damage the air, water, soil, wildlife, or fellow humans and improve or eliminate it 
  
  
• Take time to think about how and why each job is performed and make the effort to eliminate damaging actions or seek professional advice. 
  
  
• Seek assistance from the Environmental Division if you have any doubts or questions. 
  
  
• Volunteer to help clean up your environment, and always leave a work place or operations area cleaner than it was when you got there. 
  
  
• Become an informed environmental proponent at your work place. When you find and correct a problem, share your experiences with others within the command. These success stories will reinforce the Academy as a leader in protecting the environment. 

I expect each individual to help develop and employ the highest standards of environmental awareness. Fulfilling our mission in an environmentally sound manner is of fundamental importance.
