Established
in 1972, this society is named after the American novelist Winston Churchill,
who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1894 and who by 1920 had become
one of the most widely read authors in America. The objectives of the Churchill
Society are to supplement the English curriculum by sponsoring lectures,
films, and other programs of interest to students of literature; to advise
the English Department about midshipman attitudes regarding the current
curriculum; and to enhance the opportunity for midshipmen to attend cultural
activities in the Washington-Baltimore area. Additionally, in order to
stimulate interest in creative writing among the Brigade, the society sponsors
the literary journal Labyrinth. The Churchill Society also inducts members
into its honorary society, the Nu Lambda Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the
national English honor society. Finally, during the academic year, the
members of the Churchill Society, along with members of the English Department
faculty, gather regularly to listen to guest speakers, usually someone
involved professionally in the arts--a novelist, poet, actor, or scholar.
