Stage Presence corrections: _____________________________________________________________________________________________

(Posture should be erect, arms at his or her sides, and feet comfortably spread apart to allow the even distribution of body weight.Do not allow midshipmen to stand awkwardly or sloppily with hands in pockets or feet crossed or allow them to shift their weight back and forth between each of their feet.Watch for swaying, rocking, or other nervous behavior.)

 

Gesture corrections: ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

(Gestures should be natural and varied, rising in energy when the emphasis on a particular point rises.The good speaker will have a wide range of gestures small, medium, and large.If a midshipman is self-conscious about his or her gestures (they usually be small and intermittent) make them practice using their entire upper-body as they are speaking.Encourage them to exaggerate their Gestures.)

 

Eye Contact corrections: _______________________________________________________________________________________________

(Ensure that the speaker is making eye contact with everyone in the audience.If they are looking at the floor or out into space or at the ceiling more than 5% of their speech they need to work on focusing on their audience.)

(Movement should be natural.Watch for nervous feet tappings and other annoying movement tics.Let them know if they move too much or too quickly.Look for the other extreme as well.)

(Is the speaker speaking clearly?If not, identify the cause of the problem.Speaking too quickly?Filling pauses with the deadly “UH?”Speaking in a monotone?Inflecting clearly?Showing enthusiasm?[Troubles with pronunciation, grammar, or stuttering may require outside help.Otherwise the midshipman needs to work on these areas on his or her own. Constant practice and verbatim speech memorization may work for some stutterers.]
