The paper on Elizabeth Bowen does a decent job of portraying her life. There are several small points that the author neglected to mention. Bowen's family was well to do, but she had many hard times as well. The strongest bias of the paper is one towards her being a regular lady, with no real pains and eccentricities. Another examination of her life reveals that she had a very confusing childhood and that she, despite her marriage, struggled with homosexual desires.
A trait in her character that appears to be stronger than the author mentions in his paper, is Bowen's lesbianism. The strong feminist theme in her writing actually brings some people to consider some of her writings as Lesbian literature. In one of her stories, she directly addresses the subject. This use of lesbian narrative brings about in her works and even stronger theme of feminism. She's not just writing about feminism in a traditional manner, especially for her time period. She was writing for a total change in the worldly perspective of women. The paper does a fine job of discussing the events of her life, but this aspect of her life and literature i underplayed.
Another aspect of her life that the author passes over quickly was her work during World War II. The author mentions how this time was life changing for her, and he only briefly mentions what she did. "She eavesdropped in Eire for the British Ministry of Information." (Greene 605) This time was a beginning to something that is found in a large amount of her literature, a nosy, spying sort of nature.
The paper also does not mention her short story, A Demon Lover at all. This story is by far her most reprinted story. (Greene 614) This story is often taken to be simply rewriting of an older British ghost story. Even though, it has become quite possibly her most well-known work. The author does include many of her other stories in his paper, and he adequately describes her life events that brought about these stories.
Other than these two discrepancies the paper gives a good view of Bowen's life. Overall, the paper is an effective one. It is difficult to include all the smaller details of a person's life is a short English paper such as this one. It is a very well done condensed report of her life, including most of the very important things that make Elizabeth Bowen the lady that she was.
