The essay, "St. Brigit, Fact, Myth, Legend, . . . ?", retells the many stories surruonding St. Brigit's life and works. The author focused on the blending of the facts, myths, and legends of St. Brigit as a result of passing history orally. Because of this blending, there is an indistinct line established between St. Brigit's religion and her Irish culture. However, the paper strays from this argument. Instead, it is a factual biography of St. Brigit and a collection of the myths and legends about her.
The author had a good idea originally and should have tried to organize his or her information and better argue the thesis. Within the first introductory paragraph, the reader knows that from his research "many actual facts were embellished due to a lack of historical facts". This idea is further emphasized in the title, "St. Brigit, Fact, Myth, Legend, . . . ?" letting the reader know that there is much confusion over the true history of St. Brigit. Oddly, the author then explains that "rich culture and tradition of the Celts was enshrouded by religion" giving the paper a new twist to the thesis. A better connection could have been made through more articulate writing.
St. Brigit was remembered for many things, as noted in the many endearing tales passed on to others. She was called by the Holy Spirit, she exemplified reverence and piety, and she even performed miracles. Again, these are all tales passed down orally, however she does have some tangible history to be remembered forever. She founded a monastery, Cell-Dara, and wrote poetry, of which is the well known, "The Heavenly Banquet". With these two major productions of her life and work she has greatly influenced all of Ireland from her life in the fifth century to modern day.
However, looking at the sources researched, it is understood how a rather factual account of St. Brigit would result. There is not much written on her in particular except for the simple biographies. A suggestion would be to look up the monastery or her actual book and find information on her works and influences. The essay gave a clear description of an incredible woman. St. Brigit brightened the faces of many Irish people in her time. Through her stories people learn to live a life of piety and generosity like she did. By passing on these stories, just as this author has, the memory of St. Brigit will remain for a long time.
