Lambda Kappa Chapter
IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu is the student honor society of the IEEE and is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing excellence in the fields of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Members consist of students, alumni, and other professionals who have demonstrated exceptional academic and professional accomplishments. Student members are selected on the basis of scholastic standing, character, and leadership. IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu consists of about 200 university chapters.

April 2012- Eta Kappa Nu Member Selected as Trident Scholar
MIDN 2/C Kyle Elam has been selected as a Class of 2013 Trident Scholar. The United States Naval Academy instituted the Trident Scholar Program in 1963 to provide an opportunity for a limited number of exceptionally capable students to engage in independent study and research during their senior year. Each Trident Scholar's program is modified to substitute research courses and thesis for traditional courses within the major. It is through participation in the Trident Scholar Program that a midshipman has the opportunity to contribute his thoughts, intuition, creativity and enthusiasm into a substantial, non-textbook problem.

April 2012- Eta Kappa Nu Members Selected as Bowman Scholars
Each year, a small group of Naval Academy midshipmen are appointed as Admiral Frank Bowman Scholars. Bowman Scholars participate in a tailored research internship during one of the summer training blocks following junior year and participate in a special research-based learning opportunity during their senior year. During the first year of commissioned service after graduation from the Academy, Bowman Scholars will likely be offered immediate, one-year graduate education experiences at the Naval Postgraduate School, resulting in a Master's degree.
This year's HKN Bowman Scholars are MIDN 2/C Christopher Stevens and MIDN 2/C Kyle Elam. They follow in the footsteps of last year's Bowman Scholar selectees, MIDN 1/C David Hoyle and MIDN 1/C Anand Jantzen.

March 2012- Eta Kappa Nu Member Selected for National Security Agency Internship
MIDN 2/C Christopher Stevens has been selected for a prestigious six-week NSA internship. He plans to focus his research in the area of biometrics, including sensor design, algorithm development and biometric systems testing. NSA internships provide midshipmen with a unique opportunity to apply the technical knowledge gained during academic studies to real-world government and military problems. Midshipman work side-by-side with military and civilian NSA employees while gaining an overview of NSA operations.
MIDN 2/C Christopher Stevens follows in the footsteps of MIDN 1/C David Hoyle, who completed an NSA internship in the summer of 2011.

March 2012- Eta Kappa Nu Member Selected for Naval Research Lab Internships
MIDN 2/C Alex Herbelin and MIDN 2/C Kyle Elam have been selected for summer internships at the Naval Research Labs. MIDN Elam will be researching composite-embedded fiber optic sensors. MIDN Herbelin will be researching Wireless Propagation. NRL internships provide midshipmen with a unique opportunity to apply the technical knowledge gained during academic studies to real-world government and military problems.

February 2012- Eta Kappa Nu Member excels as Varsity Athlete
MIDN Chris Fowler continues to excel as a scholar and as a varsity athlete on the Track and Field team. During his sophomore season at USNA he placed sixth at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in the decathlon, and placed second among decathletes in the 400m, second in the 1,500m run and second in the shot put. At the Patriot League Indoor Championship he placed sixth in the heptathlon and placed first among heptathletes in the shot put. In high-school MIDN Fowler placed fourth in the Nike Indoor Pentathlon in 2009, earned All-American, all-state, All-New England and all-league honors for indoor and outdoor track and field. He won a state title in 400m hurdles and 4x200m in outdoor track as a senior and led his team to a Division II State Championship in 2009.

January 2012- Leaders in Academics--Leaders in the Brigade!
Each semester, the Commandant of Midshipmen recommends, and the Superintendent of the Naval Academy appoints, select Midshipmen to serve as officers of the Brigade organization. The midshipmen chosen are specifically those who set the example, make the chain of command work, delegate and supervise, and maintain high standards. These midshipmen ("stripers") are assigned appropriate authority and responsibility for the direction and administration of the Brigade. In the performance of their duties, these Midshipmen assume responsibilities and concurrent accountability of command, especially in the maintenance of discipline and in the direction of drills and other evolutions.
