1964, and they will continue to support this ongoing project as it
develops. In the future, the class will sponsor a prize

class, but by midshipmen still on the Yard, and by the wider fleet.
You can find this volume either of two ways: There is a link in the

Center Fellows, who will be exploring the emerging
field of battlefield robotics, and the possibilities and ethical
challenges introduced by use of autonomous machines.
The
Ethics Bowl
team participated in two events spring term: They
competed in the APPE Ethics Bowl National Finals in Cincinnati, Ohio
March 4 - 6; and the Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles)
Business Ethics Competition, April 16 -18. For the latter, the
team's presentation, having to do with Somali piracy, had the judges

contractor, "Decatur Securities" presenting a proposal for
non-lethal means of protection and intelligence gathering. They won

The annual
McCain Conference of the undergraduate Service Academies, and post
graduate Colleges is slated for April 23 and 24. The 2009
conference will center on issues having to do with increasing
military utilization of private sector military and security
companies such as Blackwater, and will examine how the academies and
colleges can best prepare our military personnel for working with
these companies.
The
conference is the capstone event for the
Center Fellows, who have been grappling with this issue
throughout the academic year. As part of their ongoing research the
Fellows have brought in various experts, as well as executives of
such companies. The fellows are now attending the ISME conference in
San Diego California.
The
Ethics Bowl
team is presently preparing for two events: The APPE Ethics Bowl
National Finals in Cincinnati, Ohio March 4 - 6; and the Loyola
Marymount University (Los Angeles) Business Ethics Competition, to
be held April 16 -18. For the latter, the team has elected to create
a presentation having to do with Somali piracy, playing the role of
a private contractor presenting a proposal to shipping concerns who
transit the Gulf of Aden.
Colonel Art
Athens, the Center Director, is the keynote speaker for the annual
Leadership Conference being held Jan. 28 - 29, here at USNA.

The Stockdale Center website has undergone some extensive summertime
revision. You will find several changes and additions. More
will be coming, including the first edition of our newsletter, due
out in an October/November time-frame.
Since its inception as the Center for the Study of Professional
Military Ethics, the Stockdale Center has hosted and published
lectures by distinguished military and civilian figures. These
lectures have dealt with the ethical aspects of military service,
and moral courage. On our website, we now offer not only the PDF
transcriptions of these talks, but have added audio recordings.
These can accessed by visiting the
Publications and Multimedia page.
Additionally, we offer video of three of the most important events
in the Center's history.
You can watch or listen
to
Admiral Stockdale discuss his days
as clandestine commander of the POW group in Hao Lo prison in Hanoi
Vietnam. Also available is a moving evening with
Hugh
Thompson, the man that halted the Mai Lai massacre.
Additionally,
Dr. Phil Zimbardo, famous for the
Stanford prison experiment, has graciously allowed us to post his
riveting presentation concerning the "Lucifer Effect," how
dysfunctional systems or environments can make it more likely the
ordinary people act in immoral ways, and how we can counteract these
influences.
You can now listen to
almost every lecture sponsored by the Stockdale Center. More will be
added as they become available. These include talks by Dr.
Michael Walzer, Gen. Anthony Zinni, Lt. Gen. James Mattis, Admiral
Harold Gehman, Reverand J. Bryan Hehir, among others.
Lastly, you will also
find that we have an "Ask
the Center" page. A form, really, this allows you to give
us feedback, make a request, or simply ask advice. Feel free
to make use of this new feature. We will endeavor to answer every
submission in a timely manner.
