Naval Academy
Participates in Black History Month Celebration
The First Baptist Church of
Annapolis and the United States Naval Academy invite the
public to a 2009 Black History Month Program to be held at
the church located at 31 W. Washington St., Annapolis, Md.,
Friday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
This year’s theme for the
event is “The Importance of Education to Achieve Life
Goals.” The keynote speaker for the program will be the
President of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and
Foundation, Byron Marchant.
The
program will include performances by the United States Naval
Academy Gospel Choir, the Naval Academy “Commandant’s Combo”
and the First Baptist Church Mass Choir. Additional
speakers include Superintendent of Anne Arundel County
Schools Dr. Kevin Maxwell and Naval Academy Superintendent
Vice Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler.
Parking for the event is
available at the Whitmore Garage, 37 Clay St., for a nominal
fee.
The First Baptist Church
Mass Choir, directed by Lamoria Lester, Jr., Director of
Music, is renowned throughout the United States for its
musical rendition of early African American and contemporary
spirituals.
Chartered in 1985, the
United States Naval Academy Gospel Choir is an upbeat,
inspirational musical ensemble. The choir, under the
direction of Ms. Karla Scott, has performed and received
recognition throughout the country.
