The Naval Academy Gospel Choir's new director, Karla Scott, will make her debut at the choir's concert Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. at the First Christian Community Church of Annapolis at 1800 Hall Brown Road, Annapolis.
The choir will also release its third CD, “In His Presence,“ at the concert.
“Rehearsals have never been so exciting and full of energy,“ said Midn. 1⁄C Christa Stowe, who attributes the enthusiasm to Scott's new vision.
“Ms. Scott helps me to remember that all my burdens can be placed at the feet of Jesus,“ said Midn. 3⁄C Jessica Hall. “Overall, it looks to be another high-spirited and praiseworthy year, giving honor to God through song with Ms. Scott.“
Scott has an extensive musical range, including classical and contemporary gospel music. She performed for former President Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and most recently at the funeral of Rosa Parks.
In the gospel arena, Scott performed with or directed alongside such artists as Smokey Norful, Marette Brown-Clarke, Twinkie Clarke of the Clarke sisters, evangelist Jackie McCollough, Richard Smallwood, and Bishop T.D. Jakes.
Scott's teaching background includes vocal training as president and chief executive officer of the Singing Place Vocal Studio and Vocal Spa, and instructor of music at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C.
She earned a bachelor of music degree in vocal pedagogy (the science of vocal training) from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., and a master of music degree in vocal performance from the University of Maryland at College Park where she received a full fellowship for graduate study.
