Omega Kappa Chapter, United States Naval Academy
Phi Alpha
Theta is the National Honor Society fin History.
Since its establishment in 1921, Phi Alpha Theta has
grown to more than seven hundred chapters in fifty
states. It has the distinction of having more
chapters than any other accredited honor society,
holding one of the earliest memberships in the
Association of College Honor Societies. The total
number of initiates since its inception is more than
240,000.
Phi Alpha
Theta is comprised of chapter from properly accredited
colleges and universities. All students in these
institutions who have completed the required number of
history courses and are maintaining high standards in
all their college or university studies are eligible for
membership.
Omega Kappa
chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at the United States Naval
Academy is the largest chapter in the Mid-Atlantic
region. Although its functions and mission are no
different from any other chapters, Omega Kappa chapter
of Phi Alpha Theta has a symbiotic relationship with the
Military History Club of the United states Naval Academy
whose officers are simultaneously the officers of Omega
Kappa.
Phi Alpha
Theta at the Naval Academy sponsors a variety of
activities each semester. Typical events include
lectures, history movie nights with introductions by
professors from the History Department, debates on
historical issues, sponsoring special memorial
ceremonies on the Pearl Harbor attack, the Battle of
Midway, etc., participating in the yearly Mid-Atlantic
Phi Alpha Theta regional conference, and conducting the
exciting annual banquet to induct new members.
To become a
member of Phi Alpha Theta, a student, irrespective of
his/her major, must have completed at least 12 course
units in history with a minimum grade average of 3.0 in
course work and a 3.1 in history. The Omega Kappa
chapter of Phi Alpha Theta welcomes qualified midshipmen
from all majors to join.
