My name is Elkaniah Altius. I was born on March nineteenth 1983 on a small
Caribbean island called St. Lucia. I am twenty years old. At the age of eleven I
wrote an entrance examination and was successful enough to attend Castries
Comprehensive Secondary School; one of the most prestigious secondary
educational institutions in my country. Five years after my admittance, I
graduated from this Secondary School in 1999 and in 2001 I graduated from Sir
Arthur Lewis Community College. Prior to my entrance into the United States
Naval Academy I worked as a bank clerk. I am the first daughter and second of
five children. My mother has been teaching grade school for over twenty years
and she is now pursuing her Masters degree in Education from a British
University. My father is a certified technician and the owner of a small
business. My older brother is currently pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree
in Cuba. Therefore, I come from a family who has instilled in me the importance
of education.
1. Expectations: Plebe summer was the most physically demanding experience of my
life and I personally expect plebe year to be the most mental one. However, I am
fully aware that this institution will prepare me to become an outstanding
officer in my country, one that can set an example and train other officers the
importance of honor, integrity and responsibility for one’s actions which are
the ingredients that are necessary for leadership.
2. Goals: One of my main goals is a simple one, I plan to be more academically
and physically satisfactory as each year progresses. Therefore, I am willing to
work hard to achieve this objective. Finally, at the end of my studies in this
institution I am obliged to five years of service to my country. As a result,
I am planning to major in oceanography or ocean engineering in order to assist
St. Lucia in the development of its marine industry.
