Tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Operations Research

Department of Mathematics

Applications are invited for an anticipated tenure-track position (subject to approval and funding) in operations research at the assistant professor level to start in August 2010.  Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Operations Research or a similar discipline.  A Ph.D. in a mathematical science with significant operations research experience may also be considered.  Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and should exhibit potential to continue an active scholarly program.  Promotion and tenure evaluations follow the American Association of University Professors guidelines.

The USNA Mathematics Department currently has four permanent faculty members and several military instructors whose primary interests are in Operations Research in addition to two statisticians on the permanent faculty.  The department also offers several courses in Operations Research and the successful candidate will help further develop USNA's Operations Research curriculum, including developing courses in their own areas of expertise.  Candidates will also teach core mathematics courses such as calculus.

The Mathematics Department also jointly administers a quantitative economics major with the Economics Department.  This program offers unique opportunities for both teaching and research collaboration.

The Mathematics Department at USNA consists of 42 civilians with Ph.D.'s and 18 Military Officers typically with M.S.'s.  Full summer research support is usually available for the first three years of new appointments.  In addition, USNA continues to provide partial research support in the form of matching funads for research collaborations with Department of Defense, government, and industry laboratories.  Funding is also available to aid in the development of research with undergraduates.  Faculty members receive full federal government service benefits.  Additional information about USNA and the Mathematics Department can be found at the website http://www.usna.edu/MathDept/website/index.htm.

Applicants should provide a letter of application that includes a statement of professional goals (including both a teaching statement and a research statement), a C.V., three letters of reference (at least one of which is devoted to the applicant's experience and promise as a teacher), and copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts.  Applications will be evaluated starting in December 2009.  Send all materials to:  Search Committee - Operations Research, Mathematics Department, U.S. Naval Academy, 572C Holloway Road, Annapolis, MD 21402-5002
