RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY
Postdoctoral Fellow
or
Senior Research Associate
Radiation Physics and Aerospace Engineering
UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

POSITION
A research position is available for an ambitious, dedicated, self-motivated, hard-working experimental physicist or engineer with a strong desire to participate in research directed toward evaluating the health consequences to astronauts from cosmic radiations. The research is directed at the development of a space qualifiable microdosimeter to characterize the radiation quality and to determine the associated risks of cancers and other diseases. The United States Naval Academy (USNA) and its collaborators at the NASA Johnson Space Center (NASA-JSC), Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK), and the University of Wollongong (UW) have been selected for a four year grant by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. The project is to carry-out ground based research to develop a space qualifiable microdosimetry system. An initial instrument is manifested on the MidSTAR spacecraft to be launched in November 2006. The DoD and Navy have also approved the instrument for a potential experiment on a second spacecraft in 2009.

Investigators include: USNA: V.L. Pisacane (PI), Dicello (Co-PI), M. Nelson, J. Ziegler; NASA-JSC: F. Cucinotta; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute: M. Zaider, and University of Wollongong: A. Rozenfeld.

QUALIFICATIONS
An individual is sought with a Ph.D. in physics or engineering and appropriate experience who is interested in developing and testing nuclear measurement instrumentation and the implementing of software programs to obtain data on Earth and in space and then to model the radiation environment from those observations. While it is expected that the position will be filled by a postdoctoral fellow, experienced individuals will be considered for a senior research position, full or part time. In either case, the individual must be able to work independently in a structured, goal-oriented research environment and able to commit to meeting externally specified schedules such as launch dates.
