Job Description:  

The Assistant Research Professor (ARP) will conduct research related to the control of mechanical vibrations in the pointing and control of a Directed Energy (DE) system in the optical vibrations lab at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis MD. Specifically, the ARP will spend approximately 70% of his/her time planning and conducting original experimental research and helping to guide students cooperating on funded research projects. The ARP will focus on the development of control methodologies, including the use of adaptive control, in the mitigation of vibrations associated with the pointing of a DE system. The other 30% of the ARP`s time will focus on assisting in the management of assigned research projects, including interacting with sponsors, writing papers, reports, and proposals related to current and future programs. The ARP will be responsible for assisting in the development of research goals for the program and updating of research directions consistent with findings.  

The candidate will interact heavily with undergraduate students working with the principal investigators, and will be expected to help train, guide and mentor these students. The ARP will be expected to make presentations regarding his/her original research and publish the original results of research in peer-reviewed high-impact scientific journals.  Opportunities exist for the ARP to teach at the undergraduate level. 

This research is fully funded by the Office of Naval Research for 3 years, beginning in FY 07.   The candidate must be a US Citizen or have Permanent Resident Status. 

Qualifications:

The ARP shall have a Ph.D. degree in a related engineering field and/or extensive experience in areas relevant to control systems and/or mechanical vibrations. Backgrounds in lasers and optical systems are of particular relevance to anticipated research activities. Demonstrated creativity, independence, high motivation, and good communication skills, both orally and written are essential. The ARP should also exhibit strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with a research team. Demonstrated experience developing publications based on individual research is also desired.
