Typical Missionary Questions and Answers

Q: Can you enter the Academy and still go on a mission?

A: Yes, you can.

Q: Is it like normal colleges where I would leave after my first year?

A: No, not usually. It is encouraged that people finish their first two years before leaving on a mission. Thus, one year later than normal colleges. Now there are exceptions where someone may want to go after their first year, but that is usually only for sports reasons.

Q: Why after two years?

A: Because the Academy is an academically tough place, it is encouraged/ agreement with the Academy to have two years of school under your belt before leaving. Also, having a good GPA after the two years helps to get the missionaries back into the Academy.

Q: Help get back in?

A: Yes. The way it works is a midshipman resigns from the Academy to go on a mission with the intent on returning after serving their mission. But to return to the Academy they must re-apply. Thus, if the missionary had poor grades leaving it decreases their chances getting back in.

Q: Decreasing their chances? So they may not get back in after their mission?

A: In the past there have been very few return missionaries not let back in. But, those who did not get back into the Academy had poor grades upon leaving or failed to pass a physical readiness test (PRT) prior to return. There are many missionaries currently out on missions and many back at the Academy after serving. Those currently out on missions can been seen on the Missionary page of this website.

Q: How many LDS are at the Naval Academy?

A: Approximately 50 out of the brigade of about 4200

Q: How do the MIDS get to church?

A: Rides are provided every Sunday by Brother Connell and others in the ward. The chapel is right over the bridge from the Academy. (very close)

Q: How easy is it for LDS Midshipmen to get together and do things?

A: It is difficult at times. We all live very busy and regimented lives which makes many things hard. But, we have a good support group within our LDS Midshipmen group. If anyone needs help for anything, it is available, they just need to ask.

Q: Who can I contact for further questions about Plebe Summer or life at the Academy or other Missionary questions?

A: Brother Connell, he is a Naval Academy Graduate from the class of '70. He knows all of the ins and outs of the Academy and is the church representative to the Academy. Send any and all questions his way at:    njrotc@usna.edu
