LtCol Connelley received his commission in the Marine Corps from the United States Naval Academy in 1995, and attended The Basic School with Charlie Company. After choosing Infantry LtCol Connelley was assigned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion where he served as a Platoon Commander, Company Fire Support Coordinator and Company Executive Officer between February 1997 and June 1999. Upon returning from a deployment with the 13th MEU, LtCol Connelley was assigned to the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) where he served as a Company Officer between July 1999 and July 2000. In August 2000 LtCol Connelley was accepted into the Excess Leave Law Program and attended Roger Williams School of Law on a full scholarship.
LtCol Connelley completed law school in May 2003 graduating Magna Cum Laude as the Valedictorian of his class. He then reported to MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina where he spent 15 months trying cases as a detailed defense counsel. He then returned to leading Marines as he was selected to serve as the Battalion Executive Officer for Third Recruit Training Battalion for a year. LtCol Connelley then volunteered to fill an IA billet as one of the judge advocates supporting RCT-2 in Iraq. Between August 2005 and February 2006 Major Connelley was the principle legal advisor to RCT-2 as both the Deputy SJA and the SJA during numerous named combat operations. Upon his return from Iraq, LtCol Connelley executed orders to become the Command Judge Advocate for The Basic School. While at The Basic School, in addition to his legal responsibilities, LtCol Connelley was the Mike Company Commander and a principal instructor for the Basic Officers Course.
In January 2009 LtCol Connelley again volunteered for an IA billet and was sent to support the CJTF-HOA as the Operational Law SJA between February and August 2009. In 2009, upon his return from CJTF-HOA, LtCol Connelley returned to Quantico to serve as the Law of War Program Director for the Lejeune Leadership Institute at the Marine Corps University. In this position, LtCol Connelley taught throughout Marine Corps University, worked on various education projects with respect to the Law of War and is the editor of the soon to be published "Aspects of Leadership: Ethics, Law and Spirituality".
LtCol Connelley is currently stationed at the United States Naval Academy as Deputy Director, Division of Leadership Education and Development. He also teaches Law for the Naval Officer and Ethics and Moral Reasoning for the Naval Leader.
