Lieutenant Commander Michael D. Good was raised in Cañon City, Colorado. A graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics, he received his commission as a Surface Warfare Officer in 2000 via NROTC.
His first duty station was in USS PAUL F FOSTER (DD 964), home-ported in Everett, Washington, where he served as First Lieutenant and CIC Officer. He completed two deployments — one to the Arabian Gulf and another in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to the Western Pacific. His following tour was as Fire Control Officer in USS LABOON (DDG 58), home-ported in Norfolk, Virginia.
After his division officer tours, Lieutenant Commander Good taught Navigation and Naval Operations at NROTC Unit, University of Southern California. While in Los Angeles, he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics from Biola University.
As a department head, he served as Weapons Officer in USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) where he completed a Middle Eastern BMD Deployment supporting Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom and then, as Combat Systems Officer, completed the first ever DDG Modernization (HM&E portion). Nominated by the officers who worked for him, Lieutenant Commander Good received the 2009 Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award in the Department Head Category.
Upon completing his department head tours, he reported to the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Director, Surface Warfare (OPNAV N86/96) in Washington, DC where he served as the Surface/Strike Warfare requirements officer.
In 2013, he was selected as Junior Permanent Military Professor and now serves as faculty in the Department of Leadership, Ethics, and Law.
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and multiple unit and campaign awards.
