CPT Val Lopez hails from LaPorte, Indiana and received a bachelor's degree from Indiana University. He received his commission from the Army's Officer Candidate School in 2003 at Ft Benning Georgia.
CPT Lopez served eight years prior enlisted as a chemical specialist. As an enlisted dragon soldier, he was assigned to the 68th Chemical Company, Ft Hood TX; U.S. Army Chemical Activity Pacific, Johnston Island; 2-44th ADA as the NBC NCO at FT Campbell KY during OIF 01-03. After his commission, his assignments include Platoon Leader and Executive Officer for the 13th Chemical Company BIDS, FT Hood TX; and the Brigade Chemical Officer for the 4th BCT 1st CAV, FT Hood TX during OIF 10-08.
He is a graduate of the chemical basic one station unit training at Ft McClellan Al as a distinguish honor graduate, chemical recon course (L5), Chemical Technical Escort course (J5), BIDS Course (L4), and the chemical officer basic and captain career course. He is also a graduate of the Air Assault School.
His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (OLC), Army Commendation Medal (3OLC), Army Achievement Medal (4 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary, and the Air Assault Badge.
He is married to the former Melanie Perkins of Anniston, Alabama. They have three children, Ellaina, age 8, Samantha, age 6, and Noah-Henry, age 4.
