Subj: THE VICE ADMIRAL C. C. SMITH JR., USN,
AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN
SPANISH
1. PURPOSE. To publish rules and
procedures regarding the Smith Award.
2. INFORMATION. Under terms of a
bequest made by Mrs. Smith in memory of her late husband, Vice Admiral Carol C.
Smith, Jr., USN, a prize is to be awarded to the midshipman submitting the best
essay in Spanish. Last year the prize consisted of a check for $350.00
a. Midshipmen of the
First, Second, and Third Classes, for whom Spanish is not the native language,
are eligible. A previous winner is not eligible.
b. Essays are to be
original compositions written in Spanish. Quoted material, in Spanish or English,
may be included, but may not be counted toward the minimum length of the essay,
which is 1,000 words.
c. The topic of the
proposed essay should be discussed in advance with a member of the Spanish
faculty. The following areas would be suitable: historical, social, cultural,
military, economic, governmental, scientific, and literary. In sum, any aspect
of Spanish civilization is fitting which has had an influence on American life,
or which should be better understood in America in the interest of better
relations.
d. Essays, typed or
written in ink, are to be submitted to Assistant Professor Joseph Gwara no
later than noon, 9 March 2001. They will be judged by a committee of faculty
members. Criteria: quality of ideas and logical presentation, as well as
correct use of the language.
3. ACTION. Eligible
midshipmen are encouraged to participate, and to obtain advice and
guidance from
instructors.
