Subj:    THE VON STEUBEN AWARD FOR ESSAY IN GERMAN

 

1. PURPOSE. To publish rules and procedures regarding the Von Steuben Award.

 

2. INFORMATION. The Von Steuben Society of America makes an annual award for the best essay in German on a topic related to the German and American past and present. The award consists of a Navy or Marine Corps dress sword, scabbard, and case.

 

The following rules apply:

 

a. Midshipmen of the First, Second, and Third Classes, for whom German is not the native language, are eligible.

 

b. No previous winner of the prize is eligible.

 

c. Essays, of not less than 1,000 words, are to be original compositions entirely in German except for quoted material.

 

d. The actual topic of a proposed essay should be submitted to their language instructor for approval before the candidate undertakes the writing.

 

e. Essays, typed or written in ink, are to be submitted to Assistant Professor Joseph Gwara no later than noon, 9 March 2001.

 

f. Essays will be judged by faculty members teaching German.

 

g. Essays will be judged on quality of ideas and logical presentation as well as correct use of the language.

 

3. ACTION. Eligible midshipmen are encouraged to participate, and to obtain advice and guidance from instructors of German.
