Some Netscaping Hints
Hints on using Netscape browser, including how to optimize display area and speed and
how to use right-click to save links and images.
Option Menu (Alt-O)
- To get a larger viewing area, eliminate the unnecessary from your screen: From Option Menu (Alt-O), uncheck Show Directory Buttons (these refer to directories at Netscapes home site, easily reached from the directory pull-down menu via Alt-D). Get rid of Toolbox images as well (Options - General Preferences - Appearances). You may also wish to eliminate the Toolbar and/or Location box when viewing a larger image or reading lots of text at one site. Be sure to click Save Options or youll be back where you started from.
- To get a faster display, turn off Auto Load Images, and load the images only when you need them via the toolbar.
Pop-Up Menu (right-click on link or image)
- To save files for later off-line reading or viewing:
- a. Text files Ctrl-S or File Menu - Save As (Alt-F-A). Redisplay with Open File. Minor hassle: image files you have saved that belong on the page may not be display automatically unless you
"localize the sources and links (beyond the scope of this handout).
- b. Images. Right-click on the image (i.e. put the mouse cursor on it and hold down the mouse button on the right) to display this pop-up menu.
- i. If the image you see is a thumbnail (reduced size) image with a link to download the full-sized image, the cursor will turn to a pointing hand, and the full menu you see here will pop up when you right-click on it. You can then choose whether to save the thumbnail (Save this image as...), to retrieve and save the full-sized image without viewing it (Save this link as...) or to retrieve and show the full sized image, then save it later (Open this... [to replace current content of the browser window with the content of the link) or New Window with this Link [to spawn a new window with the content of the link, preserving the current window intact]).
- ii. If the image you see has no link, choose Save this image as... to save it to a file.
- Other functions of right-click (grayed out or not shown if inactive):
- a. Back / Forward go to previous / next document in the list of those already displayed.
- b. Open this vs. New Window with this link retrieve contents of this link and display it in the current window vs. in a new window.
- c. Save this _____ as... Retrieves the link / image if necessary and saves it to disk.
- d. Copy this _____ Location copies the URL (address) of the link / image to the clipboard for pasting into another application (e.g. Word Perfect--position cursor and press Ctrl-Ins to retrieve).
