The
1944 program cover would be the first of 41 consecutive Army/Navy game
covers (1944-1984) produced by Mr. Gib Crockett, an editorial and sports
cartoonist for the Washington Starr. This marked the second time the game
was played in Baltimore, the first being in 1924, and the last in 2000.

Army and Navy were ranked 1 and 2 in all the 1944 polls, and were once again
playing for the national championship. Originally scheduled to be played
at Thompson Stadium in Annapolis, the game was transferred to Baltimore
to accommodate the huge demand for tickets, and to benefit the Sixth War
Loan Drive. To purchase a ticket for the game it was necessary to also buy
a war bond valued from $25 to $1,000, a total of $58,637,000 was raised
as a result of this effort. This photo shows #44 Bruce Smith following #47
Clyde Scott through Army. [237K; USNA] |
