Database/Index Description
Major Databases & Indexes for Economics & Finance:
Provides full text of nearly 2,300 journals (including 1,100 peer reviewed journals) covering management, economics, finance, accounting and international business.
Produced by the American Economic Association, this is a comprehensive, indexed bibliography with selected abstracts of the world's economic literature. Coverage is from 1969 to the present. (Should the above link not work for any reason try the MIRROR SERVER.)
Provides access to over 500 social sciences journals covering a broad range of fields including addiction studies, anthropology, criminal justice, economics, ethics, gender studies, international relations, law, policy studies, political science, psychology, psychiatry, and sociology. Indexing begins in 1983, abstracting in 1984, and full text for selected titles in 1994.
SOCIAL SCIENCES CITATION INDEX A multidisciplinary database, with searchable author abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences. It completely indexes more than 1,725 journals spanning 50 disciplines. SSCI selectively indexes articles from an additional 3,300 journals.
WALL STREET JOURNAL Full-text of the Wall Street Journal from 1984 to the present.
WORLD DEVELOPMENT INDICATORS (WDI) World Development Indicators Online (WDI) from the World Bank provides direct access to more than 600 development indicators, with time series for 208 countries and 18 country groups from 1960 to 2005 (where data are available).
Major Databases for Financial and Industry Information:
Standard and Poor's Net Advantage provides fulltext access to a variety of S&P publications including the Industry Surveys, Stock Reports, Corporation Records as well as detailed information on mutual funds, bonds, dividends, earnings, and a directory of corporations and executives.

Designed specifically for academic institutions, this scholarly collection offers information in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. It contains full text for more than 4,600 publications, including over 3,600 peer-reviewed publications. A good starting point for research, but other subject specific resources should be also consulted.

Index to scholarly literature on the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. It provides access to articles, books, and dissertations published since 1964.
(Columbia International Affairs Online) Provides access to a wide range of scholarship in international affairs from 1991 to the present and includes working papers, occasional papers, foundation-funded research projects, conference proceedings, journal issues, and books.
EUROPA WORLD PLUS Europa World Plus is the online version of the Europa World Year Book and the nine-volume Europa Regional Surveys of the World series. First published in 1926, the year book is renowned as one of the world's leading reference works, covering political and economic information in more than 250 countries and territories.
GALLERY WATCH This is an index to the research materials produced by the Congressional Research Service (CRS). These materials cover a variety of topics that are used by Congress to gain insight into proposed legislation.
Facts on International Relations and Security Trends (FIRST) provides an authoritative and structured reference system on international relations and security, states and international organizations, statistics, chronologies and data on conflicts, arms transfers and military expenditures. It is a joint project of the International Relations and Security Network (ISN) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Catalog of U. S. Government Publications July 1976-Present.
Provides access to scholarly literature on world history (excluding the U.S. and Canada) covering the period from 1450 to the present day and published since 1954.
HISTORICAL STATISTICS OF THE UNITED STATES Topics ranging from migration and health to crime and the Confederate States of America are each placed in historical context by a recognized expert in the field. Electronic edition allows users to graph individual tables and create customized tables and spreadsheets.
Provides access to 500 of the best-known scholarly journals and numerous lesser-known but important specialized magazines in such fields as archaeology, art, classical studies, communications, film, folklore, gender studies, history, literature, and philosophy. Coverage for indexing begins in 1984; abstracting begins in 1984, and full text of selected titles in 1994.
ICPSR RESOURCE SYSTEM The Naval Academy is a member of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Center. This online resource is a collection of statistical data sets that can be used for a variety of social and political science research areas. The system replaces, and enhances, a series of ICPSR books in our collection. It is recommended that new users access the "Thematic categories" file as the primary step to understanding the arrangement of materials in this file. Please contact the USNA Political Science Department if you are experiencing any difficulties with this system.
IFS ONLINE (International Financial Statistics Browser) The International Financial Statistics database produced by the IMF (International Monetary Fund) contains time series data from 1948 to the present for more than 200 countries and areas. Users may select and transfer data to other software systems. Included are Country, World, and Commodity Price Tables as well as the Economic Concept View for individual or groups of countries.
JANE'S ONLINE Jane's Publishing is one of the foremost publishers of military information. Jane's online includes all of the Jane's print materials we get in the Nimitz Library such as Jane's Fighting Ships and Jane's Defense Weekly, but also includes many additional publications previously unavailable at USNA. Jane's Online is very useful for tracking military topics such as new aircraft and new ships, developments in foreign Orders-of-Battle, country studies and terrorism. Jane's online is also extremely useful in researching industry developments in transportation (air, land and sea) and defense markets. Select MORE INFORMATION for tips in using Jane's Online.

MicroCase Data Archives Collection of useful social science datasets converted to MicroCase format and covering a wide range of areas: political science, sociology, economics, criminology, and anthropology. Data are available at Workstation 12 in the reference area of the library.
MILITARY & GOVERNMENT COLLECTION This index provides access to many of the important military and government journals. Titles represented include specific service titles as well as those titles devoted to a specific military community. The majority of the titles are full-text; for titles not full-text, please check Nimitz Library holdings for additional information.
NATIONAL JOURNAL GROUP'S POLICY CENTRAL Provides full-text access to several political and policy databases, including The Hotline, Congress Daily, Technology Daily, The Almanac of of American Politics, and Polltrack.

Provides indexing and abstracts from books and journals of philosophy and related fields from 1940-present. It covers the areas of ethics, aesthetics, social philosophy, political philosophy, epistemology, and metaphysic logic as well as material on the philosophy of law, religion, science, history, education, and language.
POLITICAL RISK YEARBOOK ONLINE This online yearbook includes country reports for 100 countries.  Each report expertly assesses potential political, financial, and economic risks to business investments and trade. Reports include political risk ratings and alternative regime scenarios.
PROQUEST MILITARY COLLECTION This index should be used for current and historical military topics including defense finance and economics. The index includes most of the leading English language military periodicals, published commercially or by the military.

ARMED CONFLICT DATABASE The International Institute For Strategic Studies (IISS) Armed Conflict Database is a frequently updated source of information on armed conflicts worldwide. You can generate reports and download data as well as browse through the yearly analyses and fact sheets online.

BRITANNICA ONLINE The complete encyclopedia online with related Internet sites, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, interactive maps, daily features, and more.
CQ ELECTRONIC LIBRARY The CQ Electronic Library allows to you to search and read content from CQ's Politics in America, CQ Supreme Court Collection, CQ Researcher, and CQ Weekly.
(Declassified Documents Reference System-US) Provides access to over 70,000 declassified documents from numerous government agencies plus supplemental information. Ranging from the late 1940's through the 1970's, it covers nearly every major foreign and domestic event of the time period.
Full-text access to 50 years of declassified documents related to U. S. foreign policy.
DISSERTATION ABSTRACTS INTERNATIONAL A database of bibliographic records of doctoral dissertations and master's theses from most of the major colleges and universities. These materials provide insight into original academic work in a variety of subjects. Attention: these materials usually cannot be borrowed and may require purchase by the library. Formerly Uncover Reveal, this global research gateway is the world's largest website for search and delivery of research articles. It offers access to article summaries from over 30,000 publications with links to the full text of titles owned by the Nimitz Library. Customized research and table-of-contents alert services are also available.
LexisNexis PRESIDENTIAL STUDIES This database contains key primary and secondary presidential sources on almost every major political event in American history. Components include manuscript coverage from 1789, every inaugural and State of the Union Address, and thousands of government documents including Executive orders, photographs and other images.
NETLIBRARY Collection of electronic books covering a wide range of scholarly topics.
(NDLTD) Provides a digital archive of electronic theses and dissertations from universities world-wide. Some sites include historical dissertations. Most dissertations are from 1989-present.
NEW YORK TIMES HISTORICAL FILE This a full-text index to the New York Times from 1851 to 2003. Each article will display as newspaper clipping image or as a text-file.
(National Technical Information Service Database) Index to technical reports from government research agencies (1990-Present, weekly updates).
OPEN SOURCE CENTER
(formerly FBIS)
A United States government operation which translates the text of daily broadcasts, government statements, and select news stories from non-English sources around the world. FBIS Online contains materials published from April 1995-present and is updated continuously with reports available for searching within 30-60 minutes of being filed. Password required. USNA personnel needing access must register and apply for their own password.

Full-text access to more than 100 journals published by various associations and university presses. These titles cover a variety of subjects but mostly related to literature, political science, history and culture.
PsycINFO Produced by the American Psychological Association, this is a comprehensive, international database covering the academic, research, and practice literature in psychology and related disciplines from 1872-present. TORPEDO This link is to an information resource at the Naval Research Lab (NRL). Torpedo is a source for full-text access to journal articles published by Elsevier (almost 800 journals are covered) as well as full-text access to more than 1 million technical reports published by NRL. Torpedo includes a search engine to search topics in the articles and reports that are part of this system [SEARCH HELP]. *Due to subscription cancellations USNA can no longer access many of the Elsevier titles for articles published in 2004 and 2005*
ULRICH'S PERIODICAL DIRECTORY A database providing detailed, comprehensive information on serials published throughout the world.

WORLDCAT ONLINE A catalog of more than 24,000 academic, public and special libraries containing more than 36 million records for books, journals, videotapes, books-on-tape, computer files and other materials held in library collections. These records include items in print and out-of-print. A note of caution, many of the items listed in this file may be difficult to obtain due to the esoteric nature of some publications.
