Applied Ethics
  • APPLIED ETHICS RESOURCES ON WWW -- Maintained by the Centre of Applied Ethics at the University of British Columbia, the site has links to resources that are of interest to researchers in the various branches of applied ethics.  There is also a list of recommended readings and a hand-picked list of  recommended sites.
  • MARKKULA CENTER FOR APPLIED ETHICS (formerly ETHICS CONNECTION) -- The web site for the at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, the Ethics Connection is maintained and operated entirely by students under the direction of Center staff. Not only does the site apply the latest in dynamic Internet technologies, it is widely regarded as the "best ethical resource on the Internet." It provides feature articles, a database of case studies and featured links, discussion forums and electronic lists, message boards, conferences, and a "dynamic virtual database" of over 1,000 ethical links from more than 40 countries in nearly a dozen languages. The online version of the Center's quarterly publication, Issues in Ethics, and other relevant publications are also available full text via the site.
  • THE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY ETHICS PROGRAM AT NASA -- This attractive, well-designed site offers insight into JPL's internal ethics program. Primarily intended for use by JPL employees, includes the JPL Ethics Handbook, information about JPL's "Ethics Process," and as a newsletter, "Ethics Briefs." This is probably the most complete web site dedicated to an organization's internal ethics program.

Case Studies
  • ETHICS UPDATES: MILITARY ETHICS CASE STUDIES -- Part of the massive Ethics Updates website (see entries under Ethics (General) and Military Ethics below), the case studies cover a range of topics including torture, retaliation, commitment to service, intervention, and differing cultures.
  • INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL ETHICS DILEMMA DATABASE -- The Institute for Global Ethics is a nonsectarian, nonpartisan, global research and educational membership organization whose mission is to "promote public discourse and practical action around significant ethical issues." The web site features a Dilemma Database with a new dilemma posted each month. The database is completely searchable by category, keyword or title. The dilemmas presented are all real, most of told by participants at the Institute's Ethical Fitness Seminars.
  • JOINT SERVICES CONFERENCE ON PROFESSIONAL ETHICS (JSCOPE) -- Website of JSCOPE, an organization of military officers and academics formed to discuss ethical issues relevant to the military. The site offers information on conferences and conference papers. There is a new case study each month, to which responses can be sent via e-mail, as well as an extensive bibliography.  The best single source for information on military ethics.

Ethics (General)
  • ETHICS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB -- Hosted by the School of Communication at California State University, Fullerton, this site provides links to numerous areas of ethics including legal, military, governmental, and sports. Links to ethics-related electronic discussion lists are also included.
  • ETHICS UPDATES -- Maintained by the Lawrence Hinman, Director of the Values Institute at the University of San Diego, the site is "designed primarily to be used by ethics instructors and their students." It provides updates on current topics in ethics ranging from moral theory to animal rights and offers an impressive collection of ethics related links in a variety of disciplines. Email notification of additions to the site is available by request.
  • THE ONLINE ETHICS CENTER FOR ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE -- Established in 1995 under a grant from the National Science Foundation and currently maintained at Case Western Reserve University, the mission of the Ethics Center is "to provide engineers, scientists and science and engineering students with resources useful for understanding and addressing ethically significant problems that arise in the work life." The website includes links to research resources, case studies, moral leaders, problem scenarios, diversity studies, ethics education resources, and codes of ethics.
  • INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL ETHICS -- A nonsectarian, nonpartisan, global research and educational membership organization whose mission is to "promote public discourse and practical action around significant ethical issues," the Institute's website has a wide variety of resources. Links include interviews; speeches and publications; ethical dilemmas; a weekly newsletter, Ethics Newsline; statistics on ethics in business, education & public policy; polls; news releases; and teaching aids.
  • SOCIAL PHILOSOPHY & POLICY CENTER -- Founded in 1981 at Bowling Green State University, the Center is dedicated to the examination of public policy issues from a philosophical perspective, an emphasis which "reflects the belief that policy questions cannot be adequately addressed by empirical investigation alone." The website includes descriptions of the Center's journal, Social Philosophy and Policy, and its other publications, as well as information on the Center's conferences, directors and staff, Senior Research Fellows, and Visiting Scholars program.
  • THE JOSEPHSON INSTITUTE -- The Joseph and Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics is "a public-benefit, nonpartisan, nonprofit membership organization founded ... to improve the ethical quality of society by advocating principled reasoning and ethical decision making." The web site includes numerous links to ethics-related sites, featured essays, and special features such as a step-by-step guide to making ethical decisions.

Ethics In Higher Education
  • THE CENTER FOR ACADEMIC INTEGRITY -- Maintained by the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University, the Center seeks to gather and share information about academic integrity, promote and support research, and showcase successful approaches to academic integrity from schools across the United States. The website includes links to projects, conferences, Internet resources, honor codes of member institutions, a searchable bibliography of over 700 papers, and much more. A portion of the website is available only to member institutions.
  • Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character -- Created by the Boston University School of Education, The Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character (CAEC) web site dedicates itself to "helping teachers, administrators, and parents build good character in today's students and tomorrow's leaders." Although a bit slanted towards K-12 education, the site offers many useful links for higher education as well, including a reading list, research and resource links, professional development opportunities, and graduate study information.
  • SOCIETY FOR VALUES IN HIGHER EDUCATION -- Originally founded at Yale University as a fellowship program to encourage teaching and scholarship of distinction in the field of religion, SVHE is now housed at Portland State University. The site offers links to a number of projects, publications, and institutes related to ethics and values in higher education.

Military Ethics
  • ARMY MATERIEL COMMAND -- Contains guidance on some ethics issues, selected formats, and links to ethics and other sites (site is still under development).
  • CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF PROFESSIONAL MILITARY ETHICS -- Established by the Secretary of the Navy in 1998 at the United States Naval Academy, the Center's mission is "to promote and enhance the ethical development of current and future military leaders through education, research, and reflection." The website includes links to programs, events, publications, and links to other ethics related resources.
  • DEFENSE INDUSTRY INITIATIVE ON BUSINESS ETHICS AND CONDUCT -- A consortium of U.S. defense industry contractors that subscribe to a set of principles for achieving high standards of business ethics and conduct. The DII website offers a wealth of ethics training resources, information about upcoming programs and forums, and links to other sites of interest including the ethics pages of major defense contractors and legal, government, and education ethics resources.
  • ETHICS UPDATES: MILITARY ETHICS -- Part of the massive Ethics Updates website maintained by the Values Institute at the University of San Diego (see the entries under Case Studies and Ethics (General)), this section provides many unique resources. "RealVideo Resources," for example, provides links to significant keynote addresses and presentations by national leaders in the ethics community. The website also provides a substantial bibliography with many hyperlinks to full-text documents and an extensive list of Internet resources.

  • US AIR FORCE MATERIEL COMMAND (Wright Patterson AFB) -- Contains Air Force Judge Advocate General ethics updates, links to Office of Government Ethics opinions, Air Force Judge Advocate General opinions, DoD Standards of Conduct Office advisories, and ethics materials by subject matter.
