To browse the shelves for print reference books or books in the general collection, here are some broad call numbers areas:

HV – crime, prisons, capital punishment, drugs, gun control, terrorism

JC – civil liberties, individual rights, privacy

JF – American politics, electoral systems, voting

R – medical issues like euthanasia

Some topics like abortion, affirmative action, and stem cell research are interdisciplinary and can be in several different call number sections, depending on the specific focus of the book.

Besides books, there are hearings in Congress and other Congressional publications on most current political issues.  Publications of the Government are called “Government Documents.” They are listed in the library catalog and many are available online.
