DATABASES AND INDEXES
-- Frequently Used Databases in Oceanography and Meteorology --
AMS (American Meteorological Society) Journals Search -- This database enables searching across the journals of the AMS. While the Nimitz Library is not entitled to full-text electronic access to the majority of these journals via this interface, the majority are available from the Nimitz Library. Check the Nimitz Library Catalog and the Electronic Journals page for holdings.
ASFA (Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts) -- Provides access to literature in the science and technology of marine, freshwater, and brackish-water environments from 1978 to the present. (Should the above link not work for any reason try the mirror server.)
Applied Science and Technology Full Text -- Provides access to almost 500 trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional and technical societies, and specialized subject periodicals, as well as special issues such as buyers' guides, directories, and conference proceedings. Indexing begins in 1983, abstracting in 1993, and full text for selected titles in 1997.
General Science Full Text -- Provides access to almost 200 popular science magazines, professional journals, and The New York Times Science Section. Indexing begins in 1984, abstracting in March 1993, and full text for selected titles in 1995.
GeoRef -- Produced by the American Geological Institute, this geoscience database contains over 1.9 million records of North America since 1785, and other areas of the world since 1933. (Should the above link not work for any reason try the mirror server.)
Meteorological and Geoastrophysical Abstracts -- Provides access to literature on meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry and physics, physical oceanography, hydrology, glaciology, and related environmental sciences. (Should the above link not work for any reason try the mirror server.)
Oceanic Abstracts -- Provides access to technical literature on marine-related topics. (Should the above link not work for any reason try the mirror server.)
Web of Science -- Provides Web access via the Naval Research Lab to the Science Citation Index Expanded database, a collection of high quality research information from leading professional science journals from 1985 to present. The database offers access to articles' cited references, including articles, government reports, and patents. (Science Citation Index on Index Shelves 1961-1997.)
-- Additional Databases in Related Fields --
Aerospace & High Technology Database -- Provides references to basic and applied research in aeronautics, astronautics and space sciences. The database was created by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and includes references to journal articles, conference papers and government reports (mostly NASA materials).
Engineering Village 2 (EV2) (formerly EI Compendex) -- Online index to the engineering literature, including journals, technical reports, and conferences.
FirstSearch -- Provides access to dozens of indexes and databases in a variety of subject areas. Password required; contact the Reference Desk at x32420. Patrons wanting to use WorldCat Online click here.
Government Documents Index (MarciveWeb DOCS) -- Catalog of U. S. Government Publications July 1976-Present.
IEEE Xplore -- This is an online database to all Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Society published information since 1999 and can be viewed as a subset of INSPEC. ATTENTION: USNA does not subscribe to all of the materials listed in the system.
INSPEC -- Produced by the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers), Inspec provides access to the world's scientific and technical literature in the areas of physics, electrical engineering, electronics, computing, control engineering, and more.
JSTOR -- Full-text archive of scholarly journals including a general science collection. Select More Information for tips in using JSTOR.
SciFinder Scholar (Installation Instructions) -- An electronic version of Chemical Abstracts (1907 to present), providing access to more than 8,000 journals and patent references. The system includes more than 26 million substance records and CAS registry numbers. The database is updated daily. USNA has limited access; only two simultaneous users are supported at this time. Use of this product is limited to Midshipmen, faculty and staff engaged in teaching and learning activities. You can search the file by chemical substance, chemical reaction, research topics, authors, specific reference, and performing organization. Search results include links to full-text articles (if USNA access is provided) and abstracts. Midshipmen, faculty and staff can access SciFinder Scholar in the Reference Area of Nimitz Library.
Torpedo -- This link is to an information resource at the Naval Research Lab (NRL). Torpedo is a source for full-text access to journal articles published by Elsevier (almost 800 journals are covered) as well as full-text access to more than 1 million technical reports published by NRL. Torpedo includes a search engine to search topics in the articles and reports that are part of this system [Search Help].
