Scope and Content Note

The World War II Ship Action Reports, comprising 22.25 linear feet of documentation, span from January 1942 until November 1945. The reports, filed by individual U.S. Navy vessels, contain descriptions of battle action, amphibious landings, shore bombardments, convoy escort duties, anti-aircraft engagements, minesweeping activities, kamikaze attacks, and submarine engagements.

In addition to the reports, the collection also includes occasional charts and photographs.

The collection covers actions in both the European/Atlantic and Pacific Theatres of operations, represented by all types of naval vessels, including aircraft carriers, battleships, destroyers, destroyer escorts, torpedo boats, amphibious landing ships, cruisers, transports, and cargo ships.

In the European/Atlantic Theatre, the reports cover operations supporting the Allied invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky), Allied landings at Salerno (Operation Avalanche), Allied landings at Anzio (Operation Shingle), the Allied invasion of Normandy (Operation Neptune), and the Allied invasion of Southern France (Operation Anvil and Operation Dragoon). The collection also includes reports pertaining to actions off North Africa, and in the North Atlantic.

In the Pacific Theatre, reports were filed for naval support and battle action during the Battle of Coral Sea; the Marshall Islands campaign (Operation Flintlock), including the Battle of Tarawa (Operation Galvanic) and the Battle of Eniwetok (Operation Catchpole); the Palau Islands campaign and Marianas Islands campaign (Operation Forager), including the battles for Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Angaur, and Peleliu (Operation Stalemate II); the Battle of Iwo Jima; the Battle of Okinawa; the Borneo campaign (Oboe Operations); attacks against the Japanese Home Islands; and the occupation of Korea. Noticeably absent from the collection are any reports pertaining to the Battle of Midway.
