Reproduction Policy

The Special Collections & Archives Department will provide photocopies or scans of documents within its holdings for researchers when such reproduction can, in the staff's judgment, be performed without injury to the documents.  A reproduction fee will apply.  It is the researcher's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright and other use restrictions (such as donor restrictions, privacy rights, publicity rights, licensing, and trademarks) when publishing or otherwise distributing matierials found in the Department's collections.  Possession of copies from the Department's holdings does not constitute permission to publish.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code), governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction.  One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research."  If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

The Special Collections & Archives Department reserves the right to refuse to accept a duplication request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve violation of copyright law.

Please be advised that not all materials may be photocopied, for reasons such as preservation, age, or rarity. On-site researchers may use a camera (with flash turned off) if in the staff's judgment a camera is the best means to make a reproduction of a document.

Photocopies or scans of documents in the Special Collections & Archives Department are for personal research only.  Copies may not be donated to other repositories by the recipient, and may not be further reproduced without prior written permission.

In any publication, researchers are asked to use the following credit line:  Special Collections & Archives Department, Nimitz Library, U.S. Naval Academy.

Fees:

Payment must be made by check, payable to the U.S. Treasury. Payment for foreign patrons must be made using U.S. currency and in a form that will clear through U.S. banks. Please allow two to four weeks for filling a reproduction request.
