Navy Wins Callow Cup, Falls Short of Georgetown

This past weekend Navy had it’s only home race of the year, which brought out many alumni and spectators. It was the annual duel race for the Callow Cup between Navy and Penn, but this year Georgetown was welcomed into the meet as a visitor. The Lightweight Alumni from the classes of 1974, 1975, and 1976 took it upon themselves to have a reunion weekend, which included a banquet in the “N” Room, home race for the Navy Lights, and a post-race reception at Bill and Chris Daley’s home here in Annapolis.

The varsity race against Georgetown and Navy was tight while Penn followed in third place. Both lead crews got off to a great start, but the Hoyas managed to move out to a four-seat lead in the second 500 meters. With 500 meters to go, Navy began an early sprint and started to take seats on Georgetown quickly. With 150 meters to go, Navy had moved back to within one seat of the Hoyas, but crossed the finish line in second place. Official Results.

Even though Georgetown won the race, Navy retained the Callow Cup beating Penn by 10 seconds and winning the trophy for the third straight year. Navy won the three remaining races of the day. The 2V Lightweights had a great race, opening up the margin in the second half, winning the race by seven seconds over Georgetown and 13 seconds over Penn. The First Plebe Lightweight boat had a great race, besting a very quick Penn crew by almost 10 seconds. The second plebe boat had the largest margin of victory over Georgetown, which was 23 seconds.
