Navy: Top College at HOTC Regatta Selected EARC Crew and Coach of the Year
The Navy Midshipmen rowed to a second place finish in the Lightweight Eight at the Head of the Charles this past weekend. While Navy finished as the top college in the event ahead of Princeton, Georgetown and others, the Mids were bested by the New York Athletic Club by 3.5 seconds. Starting in fifth position, Navy narrowed the gap between them and Princeton, as they pushed away from Harvard who started in sixth. As the results showed, the lightweight league is as close as ever which should make for a very exciting year.
The Navy Lightweight four also raced which was comprised of 2nd varsity rowers. Although they were starting in fourth position they were passed by Cornell and Penn AC, eventually finishing in 8th place, fourth among all the colleges.
At the annual EARC Coaches' Meeting, Navy's varsity lightweight eight was voted 2004 Most Outstanding Lightweight Crew of the Year. This award culminates last year's effort in which Navy completed an undefeated season and won both the Eastern Sprints and IRA National Championships. For his efforts in coaching the Mids, Rob Friedrich was voted EARC Lightweight Coach of the Year.
While this was Navy's first time winning Crew of the Year, Rob Friedrich was named Coach of the Year once before in 1999 when his Rutgers varsity lightweight boat place second at the IRA National Championship.
