Service Selection

November, 2005

With 14 seniors on the Lightweight Rowing Team ready to graduate in June, service selection assignments were announced earlier this week. Within the Class of 2006 there was an unusual number of lightweight rowers who selected Marine Corps, making our Plebe Officer-Rep Major Lockhart very proud.

Senior Ross Penrod was selected for SEALs, continuing the long tradition of Navy Lightweights who have qualified to try out for this exclusive unit. Two members of the Class of 2005 were also selected for SEALs, Carlos Rivera and Brian Barlow. However, Brian was also offered a scholarship to attend Harvard University Medical School, which he took reluctantly over SEALs.

Senior Jon Stockton selected Submarines but is also a candidate for many scholarships that could land him at some of the top engineering graduate programs. Jon's first choice is to attend Cambridge University in England. Two of our former lightweight rowers have also recently traveled to England to attend graduate school, Justin Accomando '02 (Oxford University) and Mike Dodson '05 (Cambridge University).

Team Captain James Smith, who selected Marine Corps, remarked "I'm very proud of my classmates for their accomplishments. We have worked very hard for the past three and a half years to receive our service assignments and everyone seems pleased with the results. We have a few more goals to accomplish as a team before we move on to our respective service communities after Commissioning, but this is a great mile stone for the Class of 2006."
