Midshipmen Sweep Yale, Retain Eads Johnson Jr. Cup
When both teams arrived at Mercer, they were welcomed by flat water and great conditions. However, by the time both varsity boats approached the line for the first race of the day, conditions became less than favorable.
After surging through the chop of the first 500 meters, Navy took almost a length lead into the 1000-meter mark. Yale held on to the Midshipmen as both boats traded seats for the last half of the race. Navy wound up besting the Eli crew by 2.5 seconds, winning the Eads Johnson Jr. Cup which was inaugurated last year.
The 2nd Varsity had a very exciting race with Navy taking a boat-length lead in the first 1000 meters only to see it taken away by a sprinting Yale in the last 500 meters. Navy managed to hold on for 0.99-second victory.
The Plebe and 3rd varsity races were hard fought with Navy winning by 11 and 20 seconds respectively.
The Varsity boat was presented the Eads Johnson Jr. Trophy for the second year in a row. Mr. Johnson was unable to make the trip down to Mercer for the race but will hopefully make it to the Eastern Sprints to watch his favorite two teams go at it again.
