Depression and Suicide -- Just the Facts |
||
|
There are many nuances to what
is meant by the word depression. Everyone has felt down in the
dumps, gotten the blues or been in a funk now and then. These
periods are usually brief and pass without too much effort on the part of
the individual experiencing the bad mood. Major Depressive Disorder
and Bipolar Disorder are more serious and potentially more dangerous.
These depressive disorders are conditions that are diagnosed by a mental
health professional based on an assessment of history, symptoms and
consequences. See the Depression section for more specific
information about these problems. Most of the following statistics are related to diagnosed depressive conditions such as major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, not "being in a funk."
1. Suicide is
Preventable.
