Suicide

Gender and Suicide -- Just the Facts
 

1.  Suicide is Preventable.
2.  Men commit suicide more than four times as often as women.
3.  Women attempt suicide about three times as often as men.
4.  Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death for American men and the 19th leading cause of death for American women (2001).
5.  Suicide by firearm is the most common method for both men and women and accounts for more than half of American suicides.
6.  The difference between male and female suicides increases in adolescents and young adults.
7.  For ages 15-19, five times as many males as females commit suicide.
8.  For ages 20-24, seven times as many males as females commit suicide.
