Suicide

Fortunately, a completed suicide is a rare event at the Academy.

However, midshipmen sometimes experience periods in which they think of suicide as a way to escape the pain they are experiencing -- not usually physical but emotional.  Why such pain?  It is different for each individual, but is often related to the loss of an important relationship, fear of failing out or getting separated and the possible shame that may follow, and the feeling that no one else really understands what you are going through and you are all alone.

Why is suicide a rare event at the Academy?  Because you are not alone!  We believe one of the reasons suicide is rare at the Academy, is that you look out for your shipmates.  The rest of this page is devoted to helping you protect your shipmates from an unnecessary action.  Taking his or her own life!  If you want further assistance or have any questions please contact us at MDC.
