US Naval Academy faculty and staff are often some of the first persons to identify Midshipmen who may be encountering difficulty. Faculty and staff serve as “gatekeepers” in their ability to recognize distressed students and persuade them to utilize the helping resources available.
Often students are undergoing difficulties related to the transition and adjustment to the USNA. In other cases, however, students may experience a less predictable crisis which challenges their capacity for coping effectively. These crises include the death of family members or friends, dissolution of important relationships or significant shifts in plans for their future.
