SM280 is a seminar course intended to introduce new math majors to the research interests of the mathematics department faculty and to the variety of upper level courses offered by the mathematics department. The course is also intended to help students decide between the two tracks in the major: the Mathematics Track and the Applied Mathematics Track. Lectures will be given by members of the faculty and/or honors mathematics students. Grades will be based on short papers written on these lectures. There is no text for the course. There will be no final exam.
Students with questions about the mathematics major or upper level mathematics courses are encouraged to contact one of the SM280 instructors (Prof Withers and Assoc Prof Melles) or any of the guest lecturers in the course. Prof Withers is also the Senior Mathematics Adviser.
Students may refer to "The Everyday Writer" for guidelines to good writing. The Naval Academy Writing Center, located in Sampson Hall, Room 020, offers supplementary instruction on writing skills.
