MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TRACK(S):  Materials

Course Description

This course introduces the engineer to advanced process and fabrication techniques for metallic, composite and polymeric materials.  Traditional and non-traditional manufacturing and machining methods are evaluated.  Students spend six weeks in the shop completing tasks in casting, deformation processing, machining and finishing, rapid prototyping, EDM, composite fabrication and joining techniques.  Also, post processing and thermal treatments to improve the material system are discussed.  The course directs the students towards a deeper understanding of the role materials selection plays in the manufacturing process and for the importance of manufacturing in relationship to design.
